I use both ImHex and Kaitai struct, give it a try maybe you'll like it

A lot of unity games does it, especially the 'legacy' serializer

I've not done unity3d dev- but yea, all I've seen from it are games using XML, or BinarySerializer. sometimes its compressed.

> would you include all the quoted text in the reply-alls, or is that too much?

Only quote the relevant part and reply to it, just like this very comment.

And Linux has a large mailing archive of various lists and threads that are searchable and available to everyone and get this: free access

The linux developers' mailing lists are not producing anything like scientific papers...

Kind of arrogant no? Linux kernel development mailing lists are producing something immensely valuable with a much clearer impact on economic indicators than your average scientific paper. Comparing them is hard, but it's patently absurd to say there's nothing being produced compared to scientific papers.

Dunno who you're arguing with, I didn't say they didn't produce anything of value. I said they aren't producing scientific papers. Conversations are not like papers. The scientists have conversations (sometimes on mailing lists!) as well. The analog to scientific papers in the Linux world are... scientific papers. And the occasional essay on the mailing list, which---get this---would be more valuable to humanity if it was subsequently reproduced as a paper with references and explanations and the like.

(Notwithstanding the absurdity of academic publishing, of course.)

I don't fly and I wouldn't call my self someone that plays a lot of flight simulator. But I do enjoy navigation methods and I did learn the basics and practices of VOR navigation. I got an Android app that simulates flying courses, holding patterns etc, but only the navigation part. I would say I learned some intuition to it.

If I stab at your teddy bear will you feel that it is hurt?

Yes it will gain consciousness. You can't prove it but other people can't prove that it's not conscious either

No of course not, because its a teddy bear!

At best this is redefining "consciousness" to mean something only tangentially related.

You can prove other people are conscious off the assumption that you yourself are conscious. If you use that axiom then given genetics you know that other humans are rough copies of you so if you are conscious so are your copies because consciousness was copied.

Radical skepticism of one's own consciousness is a perfectly fine take. Stop being baited by desecration propaganda about the cogito. You don't know if what actually appears to you as "thought" is actually "thinking". The appearance of thinking is not necessarily actually thinking (Chain of thought in models should make this very explicitly obvious to people).

Take the radical skepticism pill and embrace epistemological monism - the idea that the only real truth is that all things are interpretations.

> You can prove other people are conscious off the assumption that you yourself are conscious

I'm being a bit pedantic here, but no I don't think that "I am conscious therefore you must be too" is true

I think you can claim that it is most reasonable to assume other people are conscious but I don't think it reaches the level of proof

I don't think you're being pedantic. The person you're replying to seems like he wants to cut off the solipsistic argument; the only thing we can be sure of is our own consciousness, everything else is debateable.

So while I know I am conscious, I do not know that everything I experience aren't just impulses fed to my brain by some external force. And I can't prove it either way. I have no way to test whether or not I'm a brain in a jar because the very thing I would use to evaluate the evidence is the thing that is potentially being manipulated.

However, slapping a solipsist sees them abandoning their philosophy rather quickly.

But I agree with you. We can't prove it, but "other people are as real and conscious as I" is a reasonable assumption to make

>And I can't prove it either way.

Not true. This is "provable" aspects of you and your personality can be changed by physical changes to the brain. There are thousands of instances of this including experiments that verify this.

While you can't "prove" this simply by observing this phenomenon among other people that level of "proof" is impossible. You technically can't prove anything and what we see with physical changes to the brain visibly influencing personality and behavior meets a reasonable criterion without getting too pedantic.

I'm a little unclear as to what the disagreement is.

I still think in your scenario, we would not be able to prove that that is what actually happened as opposed to someone manipulating the inputs to the brain to make it think that's what happened. Or to change it completely.

Like that's the entire solipsistic problem. The brain is just sort of self-contained. Everything is essentially input. We are incapable of really knowing the experience of someone or something else. Or if what we perceive is what's actually happening. Because, as you note, the brain can be manipulated to act in ways counter to the manner it had been acting previously. We can induce sound and vision. If we were better at it and could keep the brain alive, we could full on do a brain in a vat.

And I agree that sort of proof is impossible to acquire. Like, there is no way to prove conclusively that anyone else is conscious. But that's why we instead treat it as an axiom instead. We basically say "We're not going to prove it, we're just going to accept it as true". And that's fine.

Mostly because it not being true is an existential horror no one wants to truly confront.

And even with all of the more absurd conjectures, basically any form of "Last Thursdayism" of which simulation theory falls under, it's quicker to just assume that it's not true and treat the world we perceive as real with real rules that can be discovered through observation, testing, and experimentation. Because that's the only way we've been able to make any progress.

See it’s too pedantic now.

My statement is not that a type of proof is impossible. All proof is impossible. This is a fact of science. Proof is only possible in mathematics which is a made up game of axioms and theorems. Proof in reality is impossible.

But humans go about believing in many things without proof. We believe in physics without proof because it’s relatively consistent though unproven. And I am saying that things like brain damage, brain surgery and electrodes and the physical changes those things do to the personality is ALSO relatively consistent.

Consistent enough that we can know that the souls doesn’t exist that the personality the ego is a manifestation of the physical brain. Proof is not needed because we can’t prove anything anyway and the criterion is met in this aspect because it is the baseline of how we believe all things without proof.

For example:

We know that conscious experience and personality are manifestations of the physical brain rather than a non-physical soul because targeted changes to brain tissue directly alter a person's core identity, memories, and behaviors. The most famous historical example of this is Phineas Gage, a 19th-century railroad worker who survived an iron rod blasting through his frontal lobe; while his body healed, his polite, reliable personality vanished, replacing him with an impulsive and erratic stranger. Similarly, modern medical cases of patients suffering from severe Alzheimer's disease or traumatic brain injuries show how the physical erosion of brain matter systematically erases lifelong memories, moral reasoning, and the emotional bonds that define a person's character. Furthermore, patients who undergo "split-brain" surgery to treat epilepsy—where the corpus callosum connecting the two hemispheres is severed—effectively develop two separate streams of consciousness inside one head, with one half of the brain holding beliefs or desires that the other half is completely unaware of. If a unified, spiritual soul were the true source of our character, choices, and consciousness, physical damage, tissue erosion, or surgical separation would leave those abstract traits unharmed. Instead, because changing the physical structure and chemistry of the brain completely rewrites or splits who a person is, modern neuroscience concludes that the mind is entirely a product of the physical brain.

> And I agree that sort of proof is impossible to acquire. Like, there is no way to prove conclusively that anyone else is conscious. we can't prove, in this mathematics sense, that other people are conscious just as we can't prove that the sun will rise again tomorrow, or that my food will nourish me instead of killing me, or that everything is still there when you're not looking. for questions of this type we normally content ourselves with empirical evidence instead. and the empirical evidence for the consciousness of other humans (and, taking it further, other animals) for me would be the facts (1) that i am conscious, and that (2) i am a human like other humans: same anatomy, same behaviors, same story. indeed, empirically, it'd be absurd to think that i'd be so profoundly different from other humans in this particular aspect.

i guess what i'm saying is for me the real existential horror is the problem of induction.

can you provide an example of a claim in the subject being discussed, or any subject outside of mathematics, that manages to reach the level of proof?

This is describing empathy at best and delusion to be uncharitable.

To look at it another way: this form of social construction answers the question of "if a tree falls in the woods and nobody is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" with an emphatic "no". It is a sillier version of solipsism.

> And yet they have the most coal plants, and the most coal plants under construction. This comparison includes India.

Well yeah, but not in Beijing

So what's the reason for those pm2.5 levels?

Archlinuxarm is a fork. The name is confusing because it's a fork with the same name and logo, but they have got permission to do so

Arch linux aarch64 port is not a fork, it uses the same upstream PKGBUILD which contains minimal aarch64 specific conditional compilation and config

https://ports.archlinux.page/

I think even this project was not being mentioned so maybe they are not aware of each other

> Arch linux aarch64 port is not a fork, it uses the same upstream PKGBUILD which contains minimal aarch64

I was under the impression that that's what ALARM was. And that seems supported by https://github.com/archlinuxarm/PKGBUILDs/blob/master/core/R... (and the small number of packages in that repo). Was I mistaken?

I posted about this here https://charon.konekopi.com/posts/archlinux_on_arm/

But to answer your question:

A lot of ALARM core repositories are out of date, their extra repositories are even worse. chromium has been broken for like 1.5 year or so (I think it's fixed recently). Can't really blame them, they need to support older armv7 hardwares. Their packages are also for armv7 instead of the aarch64 architectures used by a lot of tablets/PC nowadays, so there's a huge performance/compatibility tradeoff they're making.

Arch linux aarch64 port is as the name says, aarch64 only, the people don't really care for older RPi. And because their work lives on the official arch linux repo, the pkgbuilds by definition won't be out of date. However package building are still community maintained, and will be out of date in that regards.

Very interesting! I'm going to have to test if I can switch my Asahi ALARM M1 Macbook to official repos. I know when I use the AUR for packages, they typically have both x86 and aarch64 paclage instructions, maybe 10% or so don't and then I just clone the file and add it in manually.

You can start by changing only the extra package url to the aarch64 arch linux. Do keep in mind that while the aarch64 pkgbuilds are official arch, the package building and distribution is community. they're currently compiling for armv8.2, while some are maintaining armv8, and these mismatch can cause program to crash with illegal instructions and what not.

Cool! More digging to do. I used ALARM to build some rpi images, it worked really well but alas we ended up going back to the base rpi os (Debian) due to the rolling release schedule making reproducible builds more difficult. I’m still thinking through the conceptual correct solution for an appliance…

As much as I am an avid arch linux fanboy, I don't think it's a good choice for "an appliance", the frequent update might cause unnecessary wear and tear for the storage chips if they use flash memory/sd card.

Lazy me would often update pacman database and upgrade just a few packages. Living dangerously but often times it doesn't really matter

If reproducible build is important maybe consider NixOS?

> Postal codes resolve to town (町域) level — that's how Japan's postal system works. Users still type the block/building portion themselves.

'town' might be misunderstood. The postal code resolve to area probably less than 1km^2. Not specific enough to be a block, but I wouldn't call that a town either

I only got to know calculix because that's one of the FEM solver FreeCAD use

Condition 2 are pretty much hard to get. Happens everytime in the equator, happens only twice a year in most countries, hopefully never happens in the n/s pole
