I worked there around that time, and a little later. The company had recently ish gotten independent and was actually pretty optimistic. The basic plan was to use the clearly dying dialup business to fund new businesses in media and ads, and there was even hope that the mail and search stuff could be turned around. I think the ads and media stuff broadly worked, most of the media businesses are still going though they were divested by AOL and later Yahoo. The ads stuff did ultimately have a shelf life as the industry consolidated more on Google and Facebook but that was many years away from 2014. Mail and search were eventually merged into their yahoo counterparts post merger.
People at AOL realized how the brand was that of a "wow you still exist" so were pretty good at not putting it too intrusively on new or acquired products. Good for those products, bad for the chances of revitalizing the brand. One of the interesting things post-merger with Yahoo was how much Yahoo people had not adopted the same attitude about their own brand.
More the Virtualmin guy. But, yeah, I also work on Webmin and have since '99, so I'm a Webmin guy. But, Jamie is the Webmin guy. (And, I'll note that something like half of my commits to Webmin over the past few months have been bug fixes of bugs found by models, sometimes via Nelson, sometimes just interacting with Opus in Claude Code.)
This is a huge market and there are lots of competitors out there. Just FYI that 1/3 of the AWS price isn't really considered cheap when you look at the budget market. Some of the cheap European providers have US presence now as well. That said, the pricing isn't too bad and the lineup looks good. Also, the website also gives me issues on my Android phone.

Not that offer s3-compatible object storage (which I guess is on the roadmap) and Turin VPS. These prices are legit and I'm not pulling the trigger yet but I'm definitely interested.
Yes we're going to offer this very soon, we have a bunch of SSDs but we're still deliberating on what to use now that MinIO is moving toward closed source.
garage (written in rust) / seaweedfs (written in golang) are something which I have heard is mostly recommended by the community.
Someone on lowendtalk recently created a very minimalist php s3 thing too if you only need the basic crud app but I would recommend you to select garage from what I've heard
I have also heard someone creating a new rust s3 application but I forgot its name but maybe you can look out for it too and see what fits the best for your goal.
Also coolify team is maintaining a docker image of MinIO but that was before they said that minio is going closed source and that they had just stopped providing docker images so I am not sure how valid it is right now. There must be forks who are maintaining Minio too so you can look at it too.
Regarding Comcast pricing being out of reach, what are your thoughts on their low-income program, https://www.internetessentials.com? It's 25Mbps for $10/mo. There are probably hoops to jump through, but it does seem within reach otherwise.
This project is awesome. Do you know if there's a way to bundle up something like a python or PHP script so it runs standalone without needing the runtimes on the target system?
Thanks! For Python, `cx_Freeze` should be able to accomplish what you describe in a cross-platform way. I don't know of any similar PHP tools off the top of my head.
This is also similiar to Sneaker (https://github.com/codahale/sneaker), which is written in Go. It doesn't copy to other regions by default, but it's not hard to handle that on your own. This also uses KMS, but stores encrypted secrets in S3.
