I think because the Minecraft world is like a giant tub of Lego. You go out into the procedural world to collect your pieces and then you create from that. It's actually your creations that are interesting and without them Minecraft would equally purposeless and bland.
That's exactly what No Man's Sky is though. There are entire communities centered around colonizing entire regions of the procedurally generated space. People build some seriously intricate bases and it really makes the worlds feel lived in.
The last time I tried Minecraft, from the point I dropped into the world, I could start punching dirt and trees and placing stuff around and building things.
In No Man's Sky I got dropped in some world that felt empty with tutorial on how to collect some stuff and how to get to the ship.
The first impressions weren't the same between these 2 games.
I made this point earlier in the comments, but I think the main difference between Minecraft and No Man's Sky is that Minecraft does not push the players towards specific gameplay systems, while No Man's Sky does, making No Man's Sky feel much less like a box of legos and more like a collection of specific tasks/activities.
I think biggest issue is that you are not constrained to single world. But instead directed to be mostly directionless... Some players just feel no reason to comeback. Where as with Minecraft being in single world you are more forced to comeback to various locations you build things in.
Multiplayer, demographic, community, and probably because it mainstreamed the genre. I'm pretty sure people, especially early teens, like to socialize on Minecraft with their friends. There is also the pseudo campaign of defeating the ender dragon. Minecraft is a juggernaut.
I opened a Google Workspace account for my solo business to have an email address at my domain, got suspended a month later, had no way of contacting support since they require login and I was the only user, filed an appeal, got no response after a month, eventually contacted their Twitter support account and had access restored, but through this all they charged me for the subscription three times while I was locked out and before I could cancel. I contacted their support after I was restored and they said they wouldn’t refund me because the Workspace account wasn’t suspended just my individual user (even though they acknowledged I was the only user). I had receipts and screenshots of everything including confirmation from Google’s own UI that I was suspended for that entire period, but I just have to let Google steal $100 from me now because what else am I going to do?
Also their explanation for the lockout was that I failed the verification step too many times, which I don’t recall failing even once.
If the model started from work that Tristan Buckmaster had already done, and was aided by an entire team of mathematicians as he alleged, then it's not as capable as you seem to be precluding
They probably just had an employee read his chats, figure out the general approach, and feed it to Codex. All they said was the model doesn’t look up user data, not employees.
I mean I’m waiting for like any quality software or media produced by AI. I have yet to see a piece of software, a game, graphic, blog post, small video clip, or song that was produced with AI that’s good. I always use that Coca Cola ad as an example; millions of dollars spent to make an AI ad and they even did a ton of manual post production and it sucked. With all the millions of bloggers and influencers and content creators out there with a huge incentive to make higher quality content to beat their competition, you’d think there would be one piece of content produced with AI that was great.
This is an element of the delusion. The koolaid drinkers will all tell you that we're on the edge of AGI, but if you ask them for simple examples of breakthroughs made by current AI, they can name none. The entire thing absolutely wreaks of mass psychosis.
Prepare for moving goalposts. In 50 years people will still doubt that AI can create anything novel and worthwhile, while they are going to rely mostly on the things that didn't exist before AI, in nutrition, medicine, technology, communication, entertainment. They will see them as, normal, common and simple extensions of the previous developments, pushed mindlessly a bit forward by stochastic parrots.
Claiming that AI will be valuable in 50 years is you moving the goalposts back 50 years. It’s a strawman argument, no one is saying it won’t be valuable in 50 years
They're saying it's obviously valuable and useful now, but some people absolutely refuse to acknowledge it. And in 50 years, there will still be a contingent who insists that AI is useless garbage, even as it's responsible for creating and maintaining every aspect of their daily lives.
Why doesn't this apply to Minecraft? People love Minecraft even though it's equally purposeless and arguably bland and empty.
