I bet it’s simpler than that: I reckon the management don’t give a shit, and the engineers just got away with whatever they (incorrectly) thought was right because nobody whatsoever was critiquing their work.

HSBC still operate a perfectly functional website for banking.

The more people who continue to use this, the better. It sends a clear signal that customers prefer the open web over restrictive and inconvenient mobile apps.

I’m also hanging on to my bank’s physical RSA fob as my 2FA, instead of using their app based version.

At least in UK, you'll need a physical token to do that. And you can't have both app and token. So if you had an app that is now not working, it'll take some time to get a token and restore your bank access.

I have both the app (“digital key”) and a physical RSA token with my bank in the UK.

There is actually mobile banking for these cases. Which at least for HSBC requires your account details, a (Up to? I don't know the minimum) 10 digit (numeric) pin and you have to say "My Voice is My Password" which sounds like complete theatre.

Absolutely agree.

I took this approach when the Kubernetes hype hit and it never limited my prospects.

Does it need animating ?

Just switch to wool and cotton. Plastic clothes make you sweat. Merino wool doesn’t even need washing all that often.

This is the way.

I have been selling my extremely high quality plastic clothing (Veillance made in Canada items and Canada Goose) and been replacing them with wool and cotton.

Ventille cotton can keep you dry without plastic. Developed in WW2 by the UK for hoses and buckets when rubber was in short supply. Wanted cotton is another option but doesn’t breathe.

Mover - a Swiss brand - have an entire range of plastic free clothes of high quality.

Tons of other options but the above are easy substitutes at the high end.

Bonus, unlike even the best plastics these age beautifully and there are no taped seams to degrade.

> Early tests show that the patent-pending filter can remove more than 99 percent of plastic fibers from washing machine wastewater.

Could someone in academia educate me on the need to patent inventions like this ? is it just part of the university funding machine ? or would the researchers be using this as a defensive measure ?

it’s probably >0.1% here …

The gotcha will be the “poor” round trip efficiency, in comparison to other storage technologies.

It’d be interesting to see if there’s any loss of efficiency with increasing storage duration too (relating to boil-off of the cryogenic side of the storage ?) because this would impact the economics of charging too.

I just get the feeling lithium/sodium ion for electricity and big piles of sand/dirt for heat are going to more-or-less win the energy storage race.

The only time I have ever had a machine compromised in 30 years of running Linux is when I ran something exposed to the internet on a well known port.

I know port scanners are a thing but the act of using non-default ports seems unreasonably effective at preventing most security problems.

This is very, very, very bad advice. A non-standard port is not a defence. It’s not even slightly a defence.

Did I at any point in my previous comment say that using non-standard ports was my only line of defence ?

Its security through obscurity, which puts you out of view of the vast majority of the chaos of the internet. It by no means protects you from all threats.

Correct. From what I understand, Shodan has had for years a search feature in their paid plans to query for "service X listening on non-standard port". The only sane assumption is that any half-decent internet-census[tm] tool has the same as standard by now.

If you do any npm install, pip install ..., docker pull ... / docker run ... , etc in linux. It is very easy to get compromise.

I did docker pull a few times base on some webpost (looks reasonable) and detect app/scripts from inside the docker connect to some .ru sites immediately or a few days later....

I do this too, but I think it should only be a defense in depth thing, you still need the other measures.

Add a “are my pals above or below me on this mountain” function (that doesn’t ruin my phone battery) and I’ll part with hard cash for this.

Hey Dan, I think you're going to love what I've built.

The next release (a couple of days out) displays the relative altitude for all of your buddies - so you can immediately see who's above or below you.

On the iPhone, that info also lives in a Live Activity on the lock screen so you don't have to take your gloves off to see that essential info! (Android lock screen support will be coming right after).

If you'd like to help test the feature out, I'd really appreciate it - just drop me a message via https://pistepal.app/support and I'll link you up with an annual subscription.

Cheers!

Specifically above or below? Or you're after "give me directions to my pals".. what's the use-case for above/below?

Yeah very specifically above or below. You don’t need to share exact location data (although you’d still need access to it on the local device) - just elevation.

Don’t over engineer it - just an indicator about how much further down the slope or back up the slope the rest of the pack is.

I find it annoyingly frequent that I’m either waiting for mates who have bombed off ahead because I didnt see them pass, or I’m waiting at the bottom for mates who are up the slope waiting for me because they think I’m behind ! Literally hours wasted each trip doing this.

You might think a quick phone call is the solution to this but that’s too clunky. It’d be nice to take out my phone and just quickly see something on the home screen indicating this, or on the watch app.

That's a great idea. A lock screen widget could work really well here, showing the relative elevations of your buddies. You'd have to take your phone out - but you wouldn't have to take your gloves off!

Would also think about ways in which the app could indicate the elevation of others without having to stop, remove the gloves, picking the phone from my pocket, looking at the screen, and putting everything back on every time.

Maybe having different kinds of (infrequent) beeping in specific cases: - when I'm last - when I'm first

This could get old quite quickly thought, just a thought.

Or maybe vibration ? Only starts vibrating when you’re ahead ?

So you can know if you’re waiting or catching up
