We are in the same boat. Wouldn't say I made it or got enough cash. But we are able to choose what we want to do. Turns out living a bit more simple / free is a big part of that. Living in a small forrest, closest neighbor is 10m walking, sleeping outside when we can, doing sideprojects involving energy / waterworks / woodworking. At the moment and making the house mouseproof.
For myself I still want things, but I contain myself more? I dont want to have to travel to see a tourist attractor. Or search for connections that are far away. Just see what is here already and work with that. No need to grasp so much.
That it can be recycled without "waste" doesnt mean its worthwhile. Making glass costs a large amount of energy. As far I know, when plastic is recycled, it is better for the environment than using glass.
We're so wasteful in the US. I'd guess that when glass is reused to the point of needing recycling it's a different balance - e.g. when beer bottles in areas of Europe are cleaned and refilled.
That was the practice not so long ago in the US too. But it is complex. Reusables were thicker and heavier than modern bottles, not just the super light high life bottle, but almost every bottle, I believe, and cans are so light in comparison.
It's true, but where/how it survived in Europe seems like it's a regionally or even city localized bottle re-use cycle which might shift the balance of costs and re-use.
Re-Use is the way to go, I generally check in at the re-use centre in our town, the scrap yard and the local auction sites before buying anything new.
Its a shame everything electronic is basically landfill due to either lack of circuit diagrams and parts or software that no longer works.. Ditto for new cars :-(
Either press the word combinations, ctrl+b etc, or select the text you want bold and there will be a popup.
You`re limited on the selection though, thats kinda a bummer. In my opinion making a selection and allowing a few operations, like bold, delete, is worth it.
With every step into makeing things easier, you lose something. With neural networks, we cant see how or why. With electronic music. the button that lets an orchestra play with one push, makes it more difficult to change one instrument. For webdesign / development: with tools that help you, it is harder to get things really how you want.
I notice this personally as well as coding as with music and find myself, not going back to the basics, but wanting to know more about it so it gives speed with using tools, while still being able to adjust the details.
I believe that there is value in mastering your skills and tools, and that that will you make you a better ... I dont think it has anything to do with a new generation or condifence?
There was a lot wrong with HTML and it only got a layout engine two years ago. People learned all the hacks, starting with table layouts, the the responsive div soup and then the frameworks to make it easier to make more div soup, not forgetting the build tools. There is sunk cost in this learning and a visual design process that goes with it. Anyone can make something complex.
To give that up and to take a content first approach with no visual mockups and semantic HTML is a bit too much to give up when you have teams built around the process. A younger generation starting from scratch can avoid all of this. Or they can just use Squarespace with the status quo continuing a lot longer.
The thing is that there are universities and colleges that do teach basic HTML. This will be taught with the modern HTML5 elements not too soon. When people who learn this stuff then get to do real projects they might baulk at using frameworks and libraries that are another thing to learn that is a bit unnecessary as they can achieve their design goals with what they already know.
This is 'intrinsic web design', using the inherent built in properties of the browser, keeping it simple and binning the frameworks, polyfills, libraries and visual mockup tools.
Agreed, Fountainhead was the first book I read, thouroughly enjoyed it. Atlas Shrugged, I was looking forward to bury myself in it, but it was hard to finish.
Sometimes when I feel a bit sad I remind myself to read a few chapters. It reminds me what I find important in life. What I can ask from myself and from other. It gives me joy in a good way.
