end-to-end encryption is arriving this week https://github.com/orgs/BasedHardware/projects/1/views/1?pan...

Omi | https://omi.me | Founding Engineer | SF, can start remote | Full-time | 1-10% equity | $120k+/year

Omi is a wearable AI memory that helps you recall everything important and make decisions. Put it on, speak, transcribe, summarize, automatically. In 10 months, we hit 300k users, 100M+ views, shipped 3 hardware prototypes and raised $2m from Tim Draper.

I'm Nik (Thiel Fellow, sold 2 startups incl. one to Toptal after scaling to $4M GMV). Omi is fast-moving, and looking for a founding engineer to join me. Ideal background: built/architected real products at scale (consumer or hardware).

Stack: Flutter (need to move to React Native) and C.

We move fast. You'll shape the future of wearable computing.

Email me: nik@basedhardware.com — send a note with your most badass achievement and Github. I reply to every good one.

Why are you moving from Flutter?

Their Community is dead compared to React Native :(

Sad to hear. I was considering Flutter for desktop development, maybe I should reconsider. On the other hand, it seems to be the most mature solution when it comes to cross-plarform desktop and mobile. React Native desktop support is still weak as I understand.

Yeah, I've done mobile for almost a decade and it seems like Flutter is the much stronger option here, despite a bigger market on React Native.

Over several years, several jobs, different projects, we've analyses on whether to move to React Native. Every time, it seems easier to just maintain iOS and Android with one person. There's more support for SDKs etc on Flutter than RN. Just plain native is always a safe bet if you have trouble with Flutter.

I avoid commenting on the hiring threads here, but I feel such a large change may be a mistake. Just my two cents.

It's called "implied consent"

As long as you show people you are recording - it's legal

The necklace has a visible light when listening

Because people always know a light on any kind of jewelry means it's recording and people always look for such lights.

Got it.

I am very glad that you are not my lawyer.

Similar but different: this is a productivity tool, it improves your life but doesn't replace your friends

Do you tell the same to millions of people who wear headphones and Meta Raybans?

Millions of people don’t wear Meta Raybans yet, and headphones aren’t generally recording me without my permission.

In CA, recording me in a setting where I have the expectation of privacy is illegal, unless you have asked my permission first.

So yes, the law tells that to “millions of people,” if that many people decide to start recording conversations.

That has nothing to do with using an AI assistant that only listens to your voice and doesn’t store the recordings.

This was covered with Google Glass ten years ago: <https://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2013/06/14/glasshole>

This is a pretty poor response if you're trying to sell a product.

Yes. Get your weirdo cameras away from me.

Right now it connects directly to the internet! Still have to finish bluetooth stuff so that it could connect to the phone directly

so, it has on-board wifi and thus only works at home, at work, or when public wifi is available to it? I couldn't readily tell because the instructions seem to be oriented toward development time, but the photo shows it clipped to the jacket as if it is to be worn while out and about

Just reached out to you on LinkedIn and email!

Cheers! responded!

Not yet. Which apps would you like to see?

I haven’t used the app yet, so I’m not exactly sure how it works. But I imagine it might be useful (It seems it’s always useful) to be able for it to export to structured plain text files so that it can be integrated in a note taking app like Obsidian.

Looks great, guys. I'm interested in enabling SAMA during consulting calls only, for cross-pollination, which would make an Outlook (calendar) integration super valuable.

We don't yet use RAG and collect memories time-based. Hoping to implement RAG soon For data privacy, we are adding 2 options to store your data: locally and on the server
