I know this is going to be unpopular on HN. They basically need to stop thinking Windows as a profit milking centre but as a moat to capture business and enterprise customers. In order to do that they need Windows to offer one of the best experience possible, or at least so good macOS and Linux is not much of a threat.
But I never thought Apple would venture into $599 category. Other than Education I am pretty sure large enterprise customer can get Neo for $499 as well. This completely shift the dynamics. And I guess it wakes a lot of people inside Microsoft, if they don't fight, the collapse of M$ might finally be numbered.
ARM have given enough time for their licenses, even with special terms and discount just hoping they could crack the server market. But six years in and looking at the next 3-4 years. They are no where near competing with x86 on server other than on hypersalers. I don't see how entering this market now is enshitification . If anything I wish they had enter the market two years earlier.
>M4 iPad Pro lacks always-on display despite OLED panel with variable refresh rate (2024):
Brightness, Uniformity, Colour Accuracy etc. It is hard as we take more and more features for granted. There is also cost issues, which is why you only see them in smaller screens.
Anyone who follows Apple closely for the past 10 years would know Apple's strategy of executive retiring are their job role shrink until it is fully handed over. And any executive resigning would just be an announcement.
Put this into context, it is clear Time Cook is doing a lot less of what he used to do. And now letting John doing the media piece and Keynote introduction.
My gut feeling with John, Steve Lemay for HID and Molly Anderson for Industrial design are great. Others;
Deirdre O’Brien - Apple retail still needs lots of expansions and improvements, while she has stopped the trend of Apple retail getting worst with every single predecessor since Ron Johnson. The bar is so low I dont even think that is good enough. Vanessa Trigub taking over Retail's role remains to be seen.
Craig Federighi - I basically disliked every single major software decision in the recent 15 years by Apple. Along with declining quality while increase in software spending and budgets. I think he needs to go.
Eddy Cue, the person who got Apple into TV movie and drama, now sports along with reluctant of letting go App Store 30% fees. Also the one who accompanies Tim Cook to Davos or other places, needs to go as well.
I actually liked the Design of Neo more so than the Air. It is just more practical. I also like thin bezel rather than no / minimal bezel.
I still haven't found any concrete evidence but I think the Key travel on Neo is at least 1-2mm higher than Air and Pro. And back to the good old MacBook Pro Early 2015 era keyboard.
If it could make the trackpad completely silent and an A19 Pro with 12GB, double the SSD speed would have been perfect. Would have loved M5 with 16GB Memory but I guess that eats into Air.

The design of Air and Neo is completely different. Air is non-repairable, worst keyboard, zero bezels. The Neo is easy enough to fix I dont even need to look at the manual.
Macbook Neo announced. It has been known a low cost MacBook will come, but I dont think anyone realistically think it was really going to be $599. And even $499 for Education. Now that it is real, how many new macOS user will Apple gain? Cooperate, Education and Business Sector have longed wanted an "affordable" Mac. There are plenty of organisations that are currently paying $499 or $599 for PC and would happily paid $699 for an Apple solution. Unforuntaly that product just didn't exist. Now it is here it will hit the M$ user most.
Unless Apple did something really stupid I could see Neo easily attract an additional 100M PC user across to the Mac.
