I assume this is partly interesting/funny because in the UK, both "Iceland" and "Spar" are grocery store chains :)

I went to Apple Music already back when Spotify decided to give Rogan their platform and the millions of dollars. Can't say I regret it.

Apple music is no better, but I went this route too.

But Google is now Alphabet, so should be MAANA

All the big consumer facing brand of Google are still under Google. YouTube is owned by Google directly, not by Alphabet. So it is fair to keep Google's G in the acronym. Also Microsoft should be in there much more than Netflix.

This gives us MAGMA. Like the thing that will burn you alive if you touch it.

If you leave Google as Alphabet, and keep the Microsoft for Netflex swap, it’s: MAMAA

And a 2-second 3D hologram of Freddie Mercury just popped into existence.

Close enough... https://youtu.be/pG-kdPZZwQE

> This gives us MAGMA

Best pronounced as Dr. Evil does in the first Austin Powers movie

If we added one starting with Z we could make it really confusing: AMAZAN. Any suggestions?

But a map app is so much more than street maps and navigation. I have tried to switch to Apple Maps, and it works great for navigation or getting an overview of the streets. But I cannot use Apple Maps to explore!

With Google maps, I just fire it up and search “sights” to find places near that are worth a visit. “Public beaches” to find where I can go for a swim. If I try the same with Apple Maps, more often than not I get sent to a place in Myanmar or similar which happens to be tagged as “public beach”.

Also when I search for a business on Google maps, I get photos and reviews. With Apple Maps I am happy if I get a link to a website.

I agree with you but to be fair I just tapped “public beaches” in to Apple Maps and got a bunch of nearby public beaches.

The Yelp integration is what annoys me. I don’t care much about the stars or anything in Google Maps but the photos and sometimes comments be can very instructive. On Apple Maps this information is hidden behind a third party service I don’t use or want to use.

I assume they are working on getting rid of Yelp and only use it as a stop gap until they get their own sufficient data.

They don't seem to be collecting any replacement data from their users...

I diagree. The c / z in American pronunciation can cause confusion in verbal communication here. "at ey bee [see] dot ex why [see]"

To be honest, it is more a F-U to your competitors' customers than to your own. I don't get why Apple creating a feature for their own ecosystem has to be made available to other ecosystems as well. It's not like Face Time is the only video calling solution out there.

>To be honest, it is more a F-U to your competitors' customers than to your own.

Why? As an iPhone user, I am the one who paid for the development of FaceTime, but I can't use it because communications tools require network effects that FaceTime doesn't have. I can't even use it with my wife.

I'm not saying it's somehow illegitimate or even illegal for Apple to do this, but what it tells me is that Apple cares more about hurting competitors than about providing a useful service to its own paying customers.

The way Android users complain about the lack of Apple iMessage and Apple FaceTime on their phones, you'd be forgiven for questioning whether Android had any messaging or video calling features.

I will tell you a secret: it's not Android users who complain about the lack of iMessage or Facetime. Most of them are not even aware of their existence. They are using Whataspp, or Viber, or whatever and go on with their lives.

I think the OP is referring to ground effect above the water surface, as employed by for example eraknoplans (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lun-class_ekranoplan)

I would speculate no, as it seems a trade off between inherently stable and inefficient (standard v shaped hull) and inherently unstable, but more efficient (inverted v).

Ekranoplans have wings and aerodynamic control surfaces.

I also wonder (this may be the primary reason) if the speeds a hydroplane achieves are sufficient to generate much lift in air from something the size of a boat hull.

Candela will also provide boats for a trial with the Stockholm Public Transport system, which currently employs quite a few traditional boats for transport around the city.

You should definitely be able to convince her this is a road trip to take! On the way you will pass the lovely Virgin coast archipelago as well as be able to visit the UNESCO world heritage sites Decorated Farmhouses of Hälsingland and the High Coast. Go for the road trip!

... but only 1% of the world's vehicles

As well as the sister comment mentioning distance driven as a relevant metric, some other aspects to consider are — if they only have a smaller ratio of car owners, I'd suspect there are less "car only" roads like motorways. Roads in city centres are also shared with a much higher ratio of foot traffic or people on bicycles/rickshaws etc.

The relevant metric is distance driven.

Micromorts per 1000km.

A micromort shouldn’t be confused with a little death. They are very different.
