Judo Turns Threats into Opportunities (garybasin.com)

The author uses a bad example and makes it hard to understand what he is advocating:

> If you’re Carnival Cruise right now, you can try to downplay the risk of pandemic. Alternatively, you can embrace the situation. Cruises have the opportunity to be the only safe form of travel in a world of COVID-19. Test everyone in advance and you’re guaranteed that fellow passengers are healthy.

Uh, no. Testing has a lag time. You can be infected but not yet infected enough that it shows up on tests. You have to hold the prospective passengers in quarantine for a week or two after the tests, and even then they could still be infected but show up as a false negative.

Bad example, try again.

Disclosure: I played Judo in college. I never got beyond white belt, because I got injured. But I liked to play with the black belts and I learned a lot. I like to think I gave them a surprisingly difficult “Uke” to play with, at least on occasion. If you want to use the example of how to use Judo in a positive way in this world, then you need to understand enough about the actual sport before you can try to explain it to others.
