Often when defending you don't want to make the moves with the best evaluation. You want to make those that complicates the game and gives the opponent chances to screw up. A defensive move that changes the board evaluation from -6 to -3 might practically speaking be worse than one that takes it to -9. Afaik, there is no automated way to measure what a "complicated" board position is.
