But why? Tolkien's work is done. The amount of money spent on extending it could easily create a different world of its own. The reason they don't is audience recognition, mostly in the title in this case it seems. That, to me, is not a good reason to dilute Tolkien's legacy with stuff he didn't create and would not have wanted. Let them create something fully original.
Just make sure you do it right. nothing half-A$$
