It would be great to use sqlite during development and then MariaDB in production.

It's not hard to clone MariaDB, but sqlite is much more practical.



For most sites you do not need to switch away from sqlite for production. It is fast enough.


Yes, I'm pretty sure SQLite would be more than enough for a lot of sites.

The point I was trying to make was that, if you are going to add SQLite support, you might as well add some tooling to help you switch between databases.


There are other considerations besides speed for production - like redundancy.
