With them adding ActivityPub I feel like it's 2008 again and the vision of interconnected social media, mashups and alternative apps for your accounts is alive!
I really like the direction Automattic is going with their acquisitions. Tumblr embracing the Fediverse and PocketCasts open-sourced and committed to adding Podcasting 2.0 features. Awesome stuff!
I'm confused a bit, as tumblr is more censored than twitter.
If they add activitypub to tumblr - what does that even mean? like people using other apps can suck in your tumblr feed?
That is nice and all, but it's kind of one way, like rss (right?)- hey do it.
But suggesting a jump from twitter to tumblr is not apples to apples.
I've always loved tumblr, until they started censoring naughty bits and I stopped using it. Nice that it's trivial to export it to wordpress.
Seems like the world is more ready for / in need of, an aggregator app than it needs 'another person's platform to post on and follow the rules of' - imho.
Activitypub goes in both directions. For example, people using Mastodon will be able to follow tumblr users, interact with their posts, comment, share it on their profile, all from Mastodon apps. And vice versa. Same applies to all services that fully support activitypub. Another example - right now you can follow a peertube channel on mastodon and see their videos in your timeline as if they are using mastodon, not peertube. If you post a reply on mastodon, it is automatically shown as a comment under the video on peertube.
An open API like ActivityPub opens possibilities for a client that aggregates sources like what you describe. Tumblr is stepping in the right direction...
The idea that Tumblr could successfully extinguish anything is extremely funny. Mastodon is the one which is extending ActivityPub so other offerings aren't fully compatible. Tumblr has been on life support for a decade- I seriously doubt they'll do anything other than simple compatibility
Maybe, but 2 and 3 are not not in the style of Automattic, WordPress is still open source, and still supports RSS. They are fairly committed to the concept of an extendable and interoperable platform.
"We are mostly dealing with the waves of new users right now and keeping everything scaling but interop and activitypub are ASAP."
