ICE vehicles have the same issue with range, but we don’t focus so much on it, I think because we just believe that the range os enough, and if I need to refuel I can do that just about anywhere quickly. In those cases that we are heading into an area where that might not be true, we check our fuel and ensure we’re topped up to get all the way through.

I wonder if the reason is focusing on a specific range, rather than a fuel capacity. Gallons is a pretty intuitive quantity that people are comfortable understanding. Maybe we need to focus away from range for EVs and instead focus on kWh capacity of the batteries. This is apparently less useful, since I really care about actual range - but it’s more accurate and allows me to use my human understanding to think about whether I have enough relative to my driving circumstances. Just like with gallons of gas.

Running the AC hard or driving at 80mph instead of 60mph can have a pretty big impact on range in an ICE vehicle but nobody really seems to care. A ton of people don't get the EPA rated mileage on their cars in their day to day driving habits, ergo they don't get the EPA listed range of their gas cars, but there's seemingly no organized outrage about that.


When I fill up my gasoline car it claims 400 miles of range and I have never once gotten 300 before the needle hitting empty. (And I severely doubt the extra range on E is 100 miles…) Nobody is going after my car for lying about range…
