They’re not bad lenses. They’re lenses with the right amount of low pass filtering, essentially.
If you design a DAC, and you have artefacts in the higher frequencies you will almost always filter them out with a low pass filter. Why should we expect anything else from 2D signals?
I will say that it hasn’t made much sense for displays up until now. The aliasing hasn’t been a big problem for traditional displays. But VR is different, so it’s fair to evaluate the need for some blurring.
