Ask HN: The word "Surfaces" – when did it enter the lexicon?

I'm hearing this all over the place right now, feels like it means something along the lines of feature, how does everyone else understand it?


In software, I first heard "surfaces" used about 30 years ago in the context of computer security (attack surfaces).

In general, I interpret it as a five dollar word that means "where the world interacts with the software".


As in "attack surfaces"?
